Is Processed Food Destroying Our Health?

processed food

Processed food is a relatively new invention, as processed food didn’t even exist a few generations ago. While processed foods are convenient, they lack many nutrients and contain substances that aren’t the most health-promoting. Another quality of processed foods is that they can be cheaper and easier to obtain than whole foods.

While eating whole foods is often preferable, eating processed foods may seem unavoidable. This may lead to the question: Is processed food destroying our health?

Why Processed Food is Popular

Many busy families need help to make all foods from scratch, and having some processed foods on hand is time-saving and convenient. Unfortunately, these processed foods are packed with preservatives, seed oils, and other substances that don’t support health. They are often devoid of nutrients, and many people become addicted to them because of additives like monosodium glutamate.

Processed foods can also be less expensive than buying good quality meats, fresh vegetables, and fruit. Lower-income families may struggle to purchase nutrient-dense foods but can more easily afford or access processed foods, primarily through food banks. Processed foods generally have a long shelf life, which can be beneficial for long-term food storage, but the chemicals and additives which are added to extend the shelf life often rob these foods of nutritional value.

Whole Foods Contain a Wide Variety of Nutrients

The body requires vitamins and minerals that naturally occur in whole foods, and eating a diet that contains good quality meats, fresh vegetables, and fruits can help provide the body with the nutrients it requires. Meats contain iron and b vitamins, while fruits and vegetables provide nutrients and fiber for the body. When you eat, it’s important to “eat the rainbow” to provide the body with different nutrients.

Your Body Needs Nutrients

When you eat processed foods, they are generally full of starches and other substances that can feed the “bad’ bacteria in your gut, which can cause an imbalance of the gut bacteria. Whole foods contain prebiotics and probiotics that help to feed the good bacteria in your gut, and fermented foods like cabbage can help provide the gut with good bacteria. It’s essential to ensure that your gut health is good because it impacts not only your physical health but your mental and emotional health.

The Gut-Brain Connection

There is a significant connection between gut health and brain health, as the gut is often called “the second brain.” You may notice good mental and physical health when your gut is balanced. If it’s imbalanced, working to correct any imbalances can also positively affect your mental and emotional health. You can take many steps to help improve your gut health, and most of them are easily attainable for many people.
