It’s sort of like the old adage that says ” when mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy “.  When our gut isn’t healthy,  it’s hard for the rest of our body to be healthy.  There are many things that we do daily that we don’t even think may be affecting our bodies in a negative way. . Things such as antibiotics, stress, processed foods, and over the counter medications can have a big impact on our gut health.

What Is Malabsorption?

Nutrients in our food are absorbed in the small intestines.  Malabsorption  is when the small intestines does not properly digest and absorb these building blocks of health. There are many things that can cause malabsorption to occur in your bodies. Different kinds of surgeries, medications, lack of adequate digestive enzymes, celiac disease, or imbalances in our gut bacteria (referred to as microbial imbalances)  are just a few of the causes of malabsorption .

You may experience a number of symptoms from this happening.  Depending upon what is causing malabsorption to occur in your body,  identification of the cause will determine  the best support plan to help your body heal and resolve malabsorption problem. Some of the symptoms of malabsorption that you may experience include:

  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue and feelings of exhaustion
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhea
  • Brain Fog

Ways To Improve Your Health and Recover from Malabsorption

When we know that there is a problem with our body’s ability to absorb the nutrients it needs,  it is very important to take appropriate steps to decrease the malabsorption that is taking place and take additional steps that will improve our health.   These are a few things that you can do to help this issue.

    1. Add Healthy Fats To Your Diet– If you have a diet that consists of none nutrient-rich food or processed foods, you may need to make some changes. Increasing the number of healthy fats that you consume can help. Some healthy fats are contained in avocado, eggs, and fish. For optimum results from this, you should slowly increase the number of healthy fats in your diet.
    2. Increase Hydrochloric Acid in You Diet– This is important to support and help the digestion of your food.  Adding lemon and apple cider vinegar to your diet, or supplementing with a quality HCl supplement,  can help increase your acid intake. This is particularly helpful in the process of digesting and absorbing the nutrients your body is attempting to obtain from the food you eat.
    3. Improve Microbial Diversity In Your Body– For your gut to run effectively it needs a collection of healthy bacteria to run and function best. It is important to aid in the process of digestion of healthy fats in your body. If you increase the fermented foods in your diet,  it can aid in the number of diverse probiotics that are added to your system. Kombucha and yogurt are great options to increase the amount you need, and some other fermented foods or probiotics may also help.
    4. Digestive Enzymes Will Help Digestion- An enzyme that includes ox bile, lipase, and amylase will help aid in fat digestion and absorption.   Your natural digestive enzymes are created in your gallbladder and pancreas and help in the breakdown of food. Inflammation in the small intestines may increase your need for enzymes to help break everything down.
